Properties /Uses : As per the ancient texts, Boswellia gum has been used for the treatment of rheumatism, dysentery, diseases of the testes and myriad of other disorders. Today its major use is as an anti-inflammatory agent for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, low back pain and osteoarthritis.

The quality of the dried and cleaned gum is most critical in the extraction process and in obtaining premium quality extract.

Research has shown that the Boswellic acids have an anti- inflammatory action much like the conventional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used in inflammatory conditions.

Recent studies also suggest that Boswellic acids exert significant anticancer, antimicrobial and immune-potentiating effects and in lowering cholesterol.

The benefits of boswellia are due to the presence of four triterpene acids, especially Beta boswellic acid. This Boswellia Extract is carefully standardized to contain at least 65% boswellic acids. The derivatives of total Boswellic acid are available from 10% Total Boswellic acid to 90%. There are also value added products such as AKBA (Alpha-Keto-Boswellic Acid) that are much superior in its characteristics.

No guidelines have been established as to the standard dosage for boswellia serrata. It is recommended to take boswellia 300 to 500 mg 2 or 3 times a day of an extract standardized to contain 30 to 40% total boswellic acids. However, the results may vary from person to person and the full effect may take longer time to reveal.
